What is Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic Stainless Steel has standard composition is l8%Cr, 8%Ni (18/8 steel). These stainless steels have high resistance to corrosion, good weldability, high toughness, especially at low temperature, and excellent ductility. They may be hardened by cold working and are non-magnetic. Special properties are produced by the addition of molybdenum, Niobium, manganese, tungsten and columbium.
Austenitic grades can be hardened by cold work but not by heat treatment; cold work increases strength with an accompanying decrease in ductility. They provide excellent corrosion resistance, respond very well to forming operations, and are readily welded. When fully annealed, they are not magnetic, but may become slightly magnetic when cold-worked.


There are more than 200 different grades of stainless steel. but there are five families of stainless steel: Austenitic Stainless Steel, Ferritic Stainless Steel, Martensitic Stainless Steel, Duplex Stainless Steel, and Precipitation-hardening Stainless Steel.
