Carbon Steel ANSI 1030/1040/1050-Casting Material

Medium Carbon Steel, such as AISI 1030 AISI 1040 and AISI 1050,  is generally used in the quenched and tempered condition for strength. Applications include machinery parts where strength and hardness are requisites.

Generally, those steel also can be produced by sand casting, but the grade name will be defined in other standard.

In Casting purpose, it’s origin from ASTM A732 Standard Specification for Castings, Investment, Carbon and Low Alloy Steel for General Application, and Cobalt Alloy for High Strength at Elevated Temperatures:

2A, 2Q, IC1030

C: 0.25-0.35; Mn 0.70-0.1.00; P 004; S 0.045; Si 0.20-1.00; Cu 0.5, Ni 0.5, Cr 0.35, W 0.10

Mechanical Properties:

2A: Tensile 65Ksi(448Mpa), Yield 45Ksi(310MPa), Elongation 25%, Heat treatment Annealed.

2Q: Tensile 85Ksi(586Mpa), Yield 60Ksi(414MPa), Elongation 10%, Heat treatment Quench Temper.

3A,3Q, IC1040

C: 0.35-0.45; Mn 0.70-0.1.00; P 004; S 0.045; Si 0.20-1.00; Cu 0.5, Ni 0.5, Cr 0.35, W 0.10

Mechanical Properties:

3A: Tensile 75Ksi(517Mpa), Yield 48Ksi(331MPa), Elongation 25%, Heat treatment Annealed.

3Q: Tensile 100Ksi(689Mpa), Yield 90Ksi(621MPa), Elongation 10%, Heat treatment Quench Temper

Tractor Shifting Forks

4A,4Q, IC1050

C: 0.45-0.55; Mn 0.70-0.1.00; P 004; S 0.045; Si 0.20-1.00; Cu 0.5, Ni 0.5, Cr 0.35, W 0.10

Mechanical Properties:

4A: Tensile 90Ksi(621Mpa), Yield 50Ksi(345MPa), Elongation 20%, Heat treatment Annealed.

4Q: Tensile 125Ksi(862Mpa), Yield 100Ksi(689MPa), Elongation 5%, Heat treatment Quench Temper

In ASTM A29, Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought, General Requirements

1030: C:0.28-0.34; Mn 0.60-0.90; P 0.04; S 0.05;

1040: C:0.37-0.44; Mn 0.60-0.90; P 0.04; S 0.05;

1050: C:0.48-0.55; Mn 0.60-0.90; P 0.04; S 0.05;

Heat treat at 1500 to 1600 F and water quench, followed by a tempering treatment. Different usage will define different temper process ( hardness requirement).
